Who are the Dholis?

Dholis are the vibrant performers who bring the rhythms of Punjab to life. With every beat of the dhol, they energize festivals, weddings, and cultural gatherings, turning ordinary moments into celebrations. These skilled musicians are not just performers—they are carriers of tradition, passing down the art of rhythm from generation to generation. Through their music, dholis connect communities, preserve heritage, and keep the heartbeat of Punjabi culture alive.

state of the dhol

The dhol, a traditional double-headed drum integral to Punjabi culture, has long been a symbol of celebration and community. In Punjab, the industry surrounding the dhol encompasses a wide array of activities, including manufacturing, performance, and education. However, the sector faces significant challenges.

The influx of migrant workers from states like Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Delhi has led to increased competition, with some offering services at lower rates, thereby impacting the livelihood of local dhol players. Additionally, the rise of digital music platforms and changing entertainment preferences have altered the demand dynamics for live traditional performances. Despite these hurdles, the dhol industry remains a vital part of Punjab's cultural fabric, contributing to its rich musical heritage and offering economic opportunities for many.

The problem

The story of the Dholis is extremely inspiring, with a lot of them coming from impoverished backgrounds and rising through the ranks. Many of them earn amazing livelihoods from their work. However, 2 big problems remain: literacy, and the future.

A big problem that arose in developing this project was the fact that many of these dholis have no way to be documented or advertised, owing to a lack of education. Many of them can't even read or write, and more yet have no phones or established addresses where one can reach them.

Moreover, the rising popularity of indoor parties, while not yet a big issue, threatens to replace the vibrant and energetic atmospheres that the dholis are known for creating, especially in urban celebrations.
